Launched in September 2024, the MG Windsor EV has made a splash in the Indian electric car market. It has become India’s best-selling electric car due to its low price, ‘battery-as-a-service’ (BaaS) model and great features. To further strengthen its strong position, MG is soon going to bring some major updates to the Windsor EV. 2025 MG Windsor EV: Bigger battery pack
The current MG Windsor EV gets a 38 kWh battery pack. It has a range of 332 km certified by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India), and its electric motor produces 136 hp of power and 200 Nm of torque. According to reports, MG is now going to add a larger 50.6 kWh battery pack option, which will significantly increase its driving range. The Wuling Cloud EV sold in Indonesia already has this larger battery pack, and its certified range as per CLTC standards is 460 km. As per Indian standards, the Windsor EV with a larger battery pack can have a range of around 400 km. This will make long distance trips easier without worrying about frequent charging. Even for daily use in the city, the larger battery variant will need to be charged less times a week. However, the power and torque figures of the car are expected to remain the same with the larger battery pack variant.
The closest competitor to the Windsor EV is the Tata Nexon EV, which comes with 30 kWh and 45 kWh battery pack options. Their MIDC-certified range is 275 km and 489 km respectively. However, as per Tata’s C75 methodology, their real-world range is 210-230 km and 350-375 km respectively. The bigger battery pack on the upcoming Windsor EV is expected to offer slightly more range than the Nexon EV.
ADAS upgrade: A step up in safety and convenience
Reports also indicate that the updated MG Windsor EV could also get ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). If that happens, it will gain a huge edge over the rival Nexon EV, as the Nexon EV does not get dedicated ADAS features yet. The Windsor EV’s ADAS kit may include features like autonomous emergency braking (automatic braking), lane keeping assist (keeping the vehicle in its lane), traffic sign recognition (recognizing road signs), blind spot monitoring (providing information about vehicles coming from behind), adaptive cruise control (adjusting speed according to the vehicle in front) and surround view monitoring (showing all around view). However, Nexon EV has safety features like blind spot view monitor and 360° surround-view camera system. Talking about crash test, Nexon EV has got 5-star rating from BNCAP, whereas MG Windsor EV has not undergone any such test yet. But Windsor EV gets strong safety features like 6 airbags, electronic stability control, 360° camera, hill hold control, parking sensor and tire pressure monitoring system.
With a larger battery pack and better safety features, the MG Windsor EV could further strengthen its lead over its rivals. The Windsor EV recently crossed the 20,000 units sales mark in 6 months, a new record for any electric car in India. The current Windsor EV is priced between Rs 14 lakh and Rs 16 lakh. The variant with a larger battery pack will be available at a slightly higher price, but will still remain competitive with its rivals.
‘Battery-as-a-Service’ (BaaS) model: Affordable option for customers
A major reason for the success of the MG Windsor EV is also its ‘Battery-as-a-Service’ (BaaS) model. Under this model, customers pay only the price of the car except the battery price when buying the car, and rent the battery. This reduces the initial price of the car significantly and does not put a major financial burden on the customers. Customers have to pay a monthly fee for renting the battery, which may vary according to their usage and plan. This model is especially beneficial for customers who want to buy an electric car but are hesitant due to the high cost of the battery.
